NEET Leak Protests Disrupt Bihar Assembly and Spark Violence

Protests over a NEET paper leak disrupted the final day of the Bihar Assembly's Monsoon session on July 24, 2026. The unrest began in the state capital and spread to various districts on July 23, sparking clashes between students and police. In Jehanabad, protests escalated into large-scale violence, including an attack on the District Magistrate's residence and the vandalism of government property.

Inside the Assembly, members of the Rashtriya Janata Dal demanded a discussion on the police repression of students. This was countered by members of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), who claimed that goons were posing as students to create mayhem and called for a censure motion. The dispute resulted in a melee in the Assembly well, forcing Speaker Prem Kumar to adjourn the House.

To maintain order, the Bihar Home Department suspended internet-based social media and messaging services in Muzaffarpur from July 24 until July 26. In Jehanabad, police fired rounds in the air to control the crowds. Inspector General Vikas Vaibhav reported that several officers were injured and confirmed the arrest of 15 individuals, with authorities using CCTV footage to identify additional participants.
