Atiku Abubakar Demands Transparency on 2027 Election Printing Contracts
Atiku Abubakar demanded that INEC disclose companies printing 2027 election materials following reports that a French firm may be handling the majority of ballots.
Presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress demanded that the Independent National Electoral Commission disclose the companies contracted to print sensitive materials for the 2027 general elections. Abubakar raised concerns over reports that an undisclosed company in France may have been allocated more than half of the materials, including presidential ballots, while the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Plc is allegedly handling only 15 to 17 states.
Abubakar specifically questioned if Hitech or its associates secured these contracts, citing business ties between the Chagoury family, owners of Hitech, and the family of President Bola Tinubu. He further urged the Central Bank of Nigeria to disclose its banknote-printing allocations and contractor roles.
Beyond procurement, Abubakar called for transparency regarding recent personnel redeployments within the Electoral Operations and Information and Communication Technology departments of the commission. He urged the body to prove these changes were based on merit rather than political interference. Abubakar warned that any attempt to rig the 2027 polls would be met with determined resistance through lawful civic action.
