Goldman Sachs Recommends Japanese Yen as AI Market Hedge
Goldman Sachs advises investors to short the USD/JPY pair to protect portfolios against potential growth instability and shocks related to the artificial intelligence boom.
Strategists at Goldman Sachs report that the Japanese yen is becoming a more effective hedge against market shocks driven by the artificial intelligence boom. The firm observed the yen surging against the dollar during a recent global technology stock rout, as concerns over AI investment pushed equities lower and triggered a rally in U.S. Treasuries.
Goldman Sachs argues that shifts in Japan's domestic policy settings have reduced the risk of sharp currency weakening during periods of rising global yields, marking a departure from the yield-curve control era of 2022. The firm suggests that shorting the USD/JPY pair provides the most effective protection against general growth instability or a broad AI-related market shock.
While the investment bank expects the Bank of Japan to maintain a cautious tone during its policy decision on October 30, it maintains that the yen now serves as a more attractive hedge for procyclical portfolios than it has in recent years.
