Governor Adeleke Suspends NURTW Activities in Osun State Motor Parks

Governor Ademola Adeleke ordered the immediate suspension of all National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) activities in motor parks across Osun State on July 23, 2026. Following a meeting of the Osun State Security Council, the directive prohibits the collection of levies and the operation of union activities to restore order and sanity. To enforce these measures, the governor approved a Rapid Response Squad comprising the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services, and the Nigerian Army.

While the governor clarified that the motor parks remain open, he directed security agencies to arrest anyone operating in the name of the union. The Osun State government later clarified that the directive did not dissolve the NURTW leadership; the executive led by Wakeel Alowonle remains the only recognized authority. This statement served to counter claims by Kazeem Oyewale and the Asiri Eniba group, who argued the suspension created a leadership vacuum justifying a caretaker committee.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) condemned the move as unconstitutional and illegal. The party argued the suspension violates Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution regarding freedom of association and claimed the governor is improperly interfering in a registered association's affairs during a leadership crisis.
