Elon Musk Builds AI Data Centers Powered by Natural Gas

Elon Musk is establishing two artificial intelligence-focused data centers, Colossus I and Colossus II, in Tennessee. To address urgent power requirements, Space Exploration Technologies Corp. is deploying natural gas turbines, including the use of off-grid power plants located in Mississippi.

This infrastructure strategy has faced criticism from local residents citing concerns over noise and pollution, though the federal government of the United States appears to support the approach. These developments occur as the broader AI industry anticipates a surge in electricity demand, which is projected to increase by 60% between 2025 and 2045.

The rise in energy needs is benefiting various infrastructure providers. Brookfield Renewable Partners is currently supplying power to AI data centers for Microsoft and Alphabet, while midstream firms such as Enterprise Products Partners and Enbridge are seeing increased demand for natural gas.
