Azerbaijan Sues CNN Over Secret Israeli Base Report
The Government of Azerbaijan filed a defamation lawsuit against CNN for reporting that Israel operated secret military bases on Azerbaijani soil to attack Iran.
The Government of Azerbaijan filed a defamation lawsuit against CNN in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, alleging a June 5, 2026, report contained claims that were "demonstrably and knowingly false." The report asserted that Israel utilized a secret base in southern Azerbaijan to deploy drone and commando teams against Iran during a regional war involving the United States and Israel that began in February 2026.
Azerbaijan argues that the reporting recklessly endangered its citizens and risked drawing the nation into the conflict. The lawsuit claims CNN ignored multiple requests for a retraction, including a formal demand from Azerbaijan's ambassador to the United States. To justify its standing to sue in U.S. courts as a foreign sovereign, Azerbaijan cited the 1870 Supreme Court case The Sapphire.
In response to the legal action, a CNN spokesperson stated that the network stands by its reporting.
