Burford Bridge Closes Overnight for Pedestrian Upgrades
Burford Town Council announced overnight closures of Burford Bridge from July 21 to 23, 2026, to facilitate pedestrian facility improvements.
Burford Town Council announced that Burford Bridge, a 15th-century structure on the A361 in the Cotswolds, will close overnight from July 21 to 23, 2026. The closures are scheduled daily between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. to allow for critical upgrades to pedestrian facilities.
Managed by Oxfordshire County Council under a Temporary Traffic Regulation Notice, the works are described as necessary in the interests of public safety. The road will be shut to general traffic during these windows, though emergency vehicles and residents with frontages within the closure area will maintain access to the site.
The bridge spans the River Windrush and serves as a vital but restrictive link on the A361. Because of its historic 15th-century narrow width, the structure remains a significant bottleneck for modern traffic and requires the constant use of traffic light control to manage flow.
These upgrades aim to mitigate safety risks for pedestrians crossing the bridge. However, the overnight closures are expected to cause temporary disruptions for commuters and local businesses relying on the A361 corridor. The project highlights the ongoing challenge of maintaining historic infrastructure to meet contemporary safety and traffic standards in the Cotswolds region.
