India Sets July 31 Income Tax Return Deadline

The Government of India set July 31, 2026, as the income tax return deadline for salaried individuals, pensioners, and students.

The Government of India has established July 31, 2026, as the deadline for salaried individuals, pensioners, and students who do not require a tax audit to file their income tax returns. Tax rules require filing even for those with no tax payable if they meet specific spending criteria, such as spending 1 lakh rupees or more on electricity, 2 lakh rupees on foreign travel, or maintaining savings deposits of 50 lakh rupees or more.

Following Budget 2026, the window for filing revised returns for the 2026-2027 assessment year has been extended from nine to twelve months, moving the deadline to March 31, 2027. This allows taxpayers to correct unintentional errors under Section 139(5) of the Income Tax Act of 1961.

Tax experts warn against submitting intentionally incorrect data to meet the deadline. Abhishek Soni, a chartered accountant and co-founder of Tax2Win, stated that revised returns are intended to fix genuine errors rather than rectify deliberate under-reporting of income. Meanwhile, the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal recently allowed a taxpayer's appeal after a chartered accountant firm's error caused a major discrepancy in a revised filing.
