China Warns Philippine Aircraft Over Scarborough Shoal Intrusion
The People's Liberation Army Southern Theater Command tracked and warned three Philippine aircraft after they entered contested airspace over Scarborough Shoal without authorization.
The People's Liberation Army Southern Theater Command tracked and monitored three Philippine aircraft that entered territorial airspace over Scarborough Shoal, known in China as Huangyan Dao, on Friday, August 21, 2026. The aircraft were identified as an Islander, a C-208, and a PA-31T.
Chinese naval and air forces issued verbal warnings to the aircraft, which officials stated entered the contested area without approval. Senior Colonel Li Jianjian, spokesperson for the Southern Theater Command Air Force, characterized the entry as an illegal intrusion that seriously violates Chinese sovereignty. Li warned that such provocative acts are "highly likely to cause misunderstandings and misjudgments."
The Chinese military urged the Philippines to cease these activities immediately to avoid miscalculation. The Southern Theater Command announced that its forces remain on high alert to safeguard national security and regional stability. The Philippine embassy in Beijing did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the incident.
