Amazon Plans $220 Billion AI Data Center Expansion

Amazon.com announced plans to invest approximately $220 billion in capital expenditures during 2026 to expand its data center infrastructure. Company management defended the historic spending during a recent earnings call, stating that demand for AI capacity is so high that the majority of 2027 capacity is already reserved and a significant portion of 2028 capacity is spoken for.

Management addressed analyst concerns regarding the duration of this capital-intensive cycle and the impact of supply chain inflation, particularly the rising cost of memory. The company indicated that new agreements will account for these increased costs.

Amazon further justified the investment by claiming that margins for its new AI business are tracking slightly ahead of the original core cloud business at a similar stage of development.
