Deloitte Pays $21.5 Million to Settle Federal DEI Probe
Deloitte will pay $21.5 million to settle a U.S. Department of Justice investigation into whether its diversity goals improperly influenced employee promotions.
Deloitte will pay $21.5 million to settle a U.S. Department of Justice probe into its diversity, equity, and inclusion practices. The investigation, led by the DOJ's Civil Rights Fraud Initiative, alleged that the firm's workforce composition goals for Black and Hispanic communities improperly influenced the evaluation and promotion of Partners, Principals, and Managing Directors.
The settlement also resolves claims filed under the False Claims Act by the American Alliance for Equal Rights, which is set to receive $4.3 million of the recovery. The legal action aligns with the Trump administration's broader effort to eliminate DEI policies among federal contractors, which the administration characterizes as anti-merit and discriminatory.
Deloitte denies engaging in discriminatory conduct and maintains that the settlement is not an admission of liability. The firm stated it agreed to the payment to avoid the cost and distraction of protracted litigation.
