Applied Materials Opens EPIC Center to Double Revenue via AI
Applied Materials opened a US$5 billion innovation center in California and plans to double revenue using AI to increase productivity without adding headcount.
Applied Materials opened the EPIC Center in Sunnyvale, California, a 600,000-square-foot facility funded by a US$5 billion investment. The center serves as a collaborative hub for researchers and major chipmakers, including Intel, Samsung Electronics, Micron Technology, SK Hynix, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, to accelerate semiconductor innovation.
CEO Gary Dickerson announced that the company expects to double its revenue over the next few years. He stated that this growth will not require a corresponding increase in headcount, as the company integrates artificial intelligence into product development and quality control. Dickerson noted that AI tools are driving productivity gains of up to 50 percent in specific areas and helping customers improve semiconductor yields.
While Dickerson acknowledged that energy and supply shortfalls could present short-term obstacles, he described the long-term growth fueled by the AI boom as transformative. He emphasized that the company's expansion will be significant regardless of the specific scenario.
