UNICEF Warns Middle East War May Push 23 Million Children Into Poverty

The United Nations Children's Fund reports that a regional war in the Middle East is triggering global economic shocks that threaten to push 23.4 million additional children into monetary poverty by the end of 2026. The agency attributes these conditions to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz in early 2026, which disrupted global energy and shipping corridors and caused inflation, energy prices, and shipping costs to spike.

These economic pressures have decreased the affordability of essential services and increased fiscal strain on governments in developing nations. UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell stated that rising costs are making food and education unaffordable, which may force families to rely on negative coping mechanisms such as early marriage and child labor.

UNICEF is urging national and donor governments to increase funding for nutrition, health, and education services to prevent irreversible lifelong harm to children affected by the conflict and its subsequent economic fallout.
