Jeffrey Archer, a prolific novelist and former Conservative Member of Parliament, died peacefully at his home on October 5, 2026.
Novelist and former Conservative Member of Parliament Jeffrey Archer died peacefully at his home on Monday, October 5, 2026, at the age of 86. His death occurred one day before the scheduled publication of his latest novel, Adam and Eve.
Archer was a dominant figure in global publishing, selling 300 million books worldwide. His 1979 novel Kane and Abel remains one of the world's best-selling books. Just one day before his passing, he appeared at a sold-out event at the Leicester Square Theatre in London, where broadcaster Gyles Brandreth described him as being in ebullient form.
His political career included serving as the Conservative party's deputy chairman and becoming a life peer in 1992. However, his trajectory shifted in 1999 following a conviction for perjury and perverting the course of justice linked to a 1987 libel action. Archer served four years in prison before his 2003 release and eventually retired from the House of Lords in 2024.
HarpCollins, his publisher, announced the death. Kate Elton, Chief Executive of HarperCollins UK, praised Archer as a master storyteller and a champion of the publishing process.
