Germany Suspends Construction to Counter River Fuel Disruptions

Transport Minister Steffen Bilger suspended construction work and lifted state driving restrictions on public holidays to maintain fuel supply chains during an intense summer heat wave. Critically low water levels in the Rhine, Danube, and Po rivers have disrupted river navigation and power production across the region.

Water levels at the Kaub chokepoint on the Rhine reached 14 centimeters on Tuesday, following a record low of 24 centimeters the previous week. Forecasts from the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration indicate levels could drop further to 9 centimeters by Saturday. These conditions have triggered regional fuel-price spikes, though Bilger stated that supply chains remain functional.

While coalition partners are debating potential responses to the crisis, Bilger has opposed the implementation of a fuel rebate, arguing the measure is no longer possible or affordable.
