Former Alberta Premiers Unite Against Provincial Separation Campaign

Former Alberta premiers Jason Kenney and Rachel Notley have partnered to co-chair a Canadian Chamber of Commerce campaign titled "Canada and Alberta: Stronger Together." The initiative opposes Alberta's separation from Canada, arguing that constitutional uncertainty threatens investor confidence and economic growth during an escalating trade war with the United States.

The campaign precedes an October 19 referendum in which Albertans will vote on whether the province should remain in Canada or hold a second, binding vote on independence. Premier Danielle Smith has suggested that a binding secession vote could occur as early as spring 2027. While Kenney and Notley have historically been political rivals, both now characterize the separatist movement as a dangerous distraction that hinders the resolution of provincial grievances.

Canadian Chamber of Commerce President Candace Laing stated that geopolitical instability makes greater economic cooperation essential. Meanwhile, Alberta NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi criticized Premier Smith's handling of the trade war as appeasement of U.S. President Donald Trump. In contrast, Kenney suggested that Canada should utilize its oil exports as leverage in trade negotiations with the United States.
