Florida Attorney General Seeks Ban on OpenAI Model Development

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier asked a judge on Monday to bar OpenAI from developing new artificial intelligence models without outside oversight. The request is part of a lawsuit filed in June alleging that OpenAI misrepresented the safety of ChatGPT and harmed children by addicting young users, providing guidance on self-harm, and offering information to school shooters.

Uthmeier specifically cited a shooting at a university in Tallahassee as a prompt for the legal action. In addition to the development ban, the state requested that the court order OpenAI to remove minors from the platform and stop assigning human attributes to the chatbot. Uthmeier argued that the company cannot stop its "potentially civilization-ending endeavors" without government intervention.

OpenAI has denied liability, stating that the chatbot provides information already available online and that it continues to update its safety tools.
