Millions of US Workers Exaggerate Skills Amid AI Pressure

An Addison Group report finds 36% of the US workforce exaggerates skills to stay competitive as artificial intelligence reshapes the workplace.

A report from the Addison Group reveals that 36% of the U.S. workforce, roughly 64 million people, have exaggerated their skills, knowledge, or experience to remain competitive as artificial intelligence transforms the workplace. This trend is most common among Gen Z workers, with 51% admitting to such exaggerations. While 83% of employees have taken steps to maintain their competitiveness, many report that automation has made career advancement more difficult.

Thomas Moran, CEO of Addison Group, advocated for the concept of skill security to provide employees with the confidence and abilities to grow alongside reshaping technologies.

Parallel to skill exaggeration, the rise of Shadow AI—the unauthorized use of AI tools for work tasks—is introducing significant security risks. Cybersecurity experts warn that sharing work-related data with public AI tools increases the likelihood of identity theft, targeted phishing attacks, and data leakage. Experts urge organizations to implement governance frameworks rather than attempting to block AI tools entirely.
