Rosatom Negotiates Floating Nuclear Plants With Four African Nations

Rosatom is in advanced talks to supply floating nuclear power plants to Egypt, Togo, Namibia, and Tanzania to address African energy needs.

The Russian state nuclear corporation Rosatom is in advanced discussions to supply floating nuclear power plants to Egypt, Togo, Namibia, and Tanzania. Speaking at the Russia-Africa Summit on October 28, 2026, company executives noted that 38 African nations possess coastlines suitable for these units.

The proposed plants would utilize RITM-200M reactors with a 100-megawatt capacity specifically adapted for warm climates. Under the proposed power purchase agreement model, the units would be refueled and serviced in Russia. Rosatom officials stated these floating units provide energy more quickly and at a lower cost than traditional land-based plants.

Rosatom is already constructing the El Dabaa nuclear power plant in Egypt. Beyond the African continent, the corporation has reached an agreement with Indonesia for the first export of electricity generated by two floating nuclear power units with a combined capacity of 200 megawatts.
