Francesca Hong Leads Wisconsin Governor's Race Amid Socialist Controversy

Democratic Socialist Francesca Hong leads the Wisconsin gubernatorial primary polling while facing scrutiny over past social media posts and opposition from Republican front-runner Tom Tiffany.

State Representative Francesca Hong has emerged as the front-runner for the Democratic nomination in the Wisconsin gubernatorial race. Leading in polls from 270 to Win and Marquette Law School, Hong recently held a rally at South Milwaukee High School featuring U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar and Twitch streamer Hasan Piker. Her candidacy has faced scrutiny over past social media posts calling for the abolition of the U.S. Senate and the police, as well as calls to cancel Thanksgiving and disparage Valentine's Day. Hong has since described her calls to abolish the Senate as aspirational and stated that views evolve, noting that Thanksgiving is a painful time for some in her community.

Republican front-runner and congressman Tom Tiffany has centered his campaign on opposing Hong's ties to the Democratic Socialists of America, framing the election as a choice between Wisconsin and socialist policies. While Hong leads the Democratic field, betting markets have trended toward Tiffany for the general election. Other Democratic contenders, including David Crowley, have argued that Hong's public record and media performance make her unable to defeat Tiffany.

The Democratic field has narrowed following the exits of candidates Mandela coli Barnes, Sara Rodriguez, and Missy Hughes. This has led to concerns regarding wasted absentee ballots cast before the August 11 primary. Hong continues to campaign across the state, recently holding an event in Platteville.
