Omar Abdullah Cabinet Faces Backlash Over Regional Imbalance

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah faces criticism from opposition leaders after appointing a cabinet dominated by representatives from the Kashmir Valley over the Jammu region.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has sparked a political dispute following the formation of a nine-member Council of Ministers in Jammu and Kashmir. The cabinet composition has drawn sharp criticism for a perceived regional and cultural imbalance, as seven of the nine members are from the Kashmir Valley, while only two represent the Jammu region.

Opposition Leader Sunil Sharma argued that the cabinet fails to reflect the diversity of the Union Territory. The two representatives from Jammu are Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary and Minister Chowdhary Javed Rana. Sharma claimed that the current arrangement lacks the necessary religious and regional balance required for governance.

Supporters of the government and the Jammu & Kashmir National Conference defended the appointments by citing the 2024 Assembly election results. The National Conference won 35 of 47 seats in the Kashmir Valley, whereas the Bharatiya Janata Party maintained dominance in Jammu. While previous administrations often included independent legislators from Jammu to maintain parity, the current expansion prioritizes party legislators, highlighting a tension between strict electoral mandates and the historical practice of ensuring visible regional representation.
