Mike Johnson Campaigns for Paul LePage in Maine
House Speaker Mike Johnson campaigned for Republican Paul LePage in Maine as part of a multi-state effort to maintain the GOP House majority.
House Speaker Mike Johnson campaigned for Republican candidate Paul LePage in Bangor, Maine, on Wednesday. Speaking at Sea Dog Brewing, Johnson described the race for Maine's Second Congressional District as one of the most important in the country, praising the former two-term governor as an experienced patriot. Johnson characterized the election as a contrast between "common sense and crazy," specifically labeling Democratic opponent Matt Dunlap a socialist on the "crazy train."
The visit is part of a broader October campaign blitz covering 40 districts across more than 20 states. During the event, Johnson dismissed polling that suggests a Republican defeat in the November 3 elections, asserting that the GOP will maintain its narrow House majority. Republicans view the seat vacated by retiring Democrat Jared Golden as a prime opportunity to flip, noting the district was previously won by Donald Trump.
Matt Dunlap's campaign rejected Johnson's characterizations. Campaign manager Harry Burke stated that LePage would serve as a "rubber stamp" for party leadership and criticized both candidates for supporting Medicaid cuts and blocking efforts to lower grocery costs. Simultaneously, the Congressional Leadership Fund, a super PAC aligned with Johnson, redistributed its financial strategy by canceling spending in four races, including Iowa and New Jersey, to increase investments in other battlegrounds from Texas to Pennsylvania. Democrats are preparing a 100-day agenda focused on affordability and anti-corruption investigations should they seize control of the House.
