Microsoft Executive Predicts AI Will Replace Corporate Career Ladders
Aneesh Raman of Microsoft argues AI is replacing traditional career ladders with personalized paths, though Pew research shows a gender gap in AI employment growth.
Microsoft Chief Economic Opportunity Officer Aneesh Raman predicts that artificial intelligence is dismantling the traditional corporate career ladder. Speaking at the Aspen Digital WIN Summit in late October, Raman described a new model he calls a climbing wall, where employees chart personalized professional paths based on their specific skills and interests rather than following a linear hierarchy.
Raman advocated for radical transparency to ensure workers understand how AI transforms their roles. He suggested that women might find a competitive advantage in this new landscape by leveraging human-centric skills such as judgment and empathy.
However, data from the Pew Research Center indicates a disparity in how AI is affecting the workforce. Senior researcher Nicole Smith found that while employment grew for men in AI-exposed occupations, it remained stagnant or declined for women. This trend was particularly pronounced among women with a high school diploma or less, suggesting a gender gap in AI adoption and economic benefit.
