Portland General Electric Seeks 4.8% Rate Increase for Grid Updates

Portland General Electric announced a filing with the Oregon Public Utility Commission seeking an overall rate increase of 4.8% to fund infrastructure modernization. If approved, the new rates would begin on July 1, 2027. The proposal includes an average increase of 3.9% for residential customers and an 8% hike for data centers.

Company officials stated the funds are required to replace aging poles, install 600,000 smart meters, and rebuild the South Milliken transmission line in a high-wildfire-risk area. These investments aim to strengthen the state's electric grid as energy needs grow and extreme weather becomes more frequent.

Bob Jenks, Executive Director of the Citizens' Utility Board, criticized the request, arguing that the hike effectively cancels out a recent 1% residential rate reduction provided under Oregon's POWER Act. Jenks expressed concern that residential customers are bearing too many systemwide costs while struggling with general bill affordability.
