Elon Musk Says Grok Bot Costs Are Unsustainable
Elon Musk stated that operating costs for xAI's Grok Bot are unsustainably high following reports of tighter usage limits for X Premium subscribers.
Elon Musk stated that the cost of operating xAI's Grok Bot is "unsustainably high relative to revenue" after X Premium subscribers reported hitting weekly usage limits faster than usual. Some users observed their usage metrics jump significantly in short periods, including one instance where usage rose from 44% to 87% within 24 minutes.
Grok's official account attributed the tighter limits to adjusted allocations necessitated by high serving costs. The company also noted a separate technical glitch in the Billing/Usage Dashboard that caused inaccurate high readings, though it clarified that this glitch did not affect actual metering.
Launched in August 2026, Grok Bot is an agentic assistant that requires substantial computing power for multi-step background tasks. The service currently has approximately 800,000 paying users. While some subscribers have suggested new pricing tiers or downgraded options to manage the costs, xAI has not announced official changes to subscription plans or pricing.
