DeSantis Calls for License Plate Reader Restrictions

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced on Wednesday that the use of automated license plate readers has become "out of control," calling for new laws to prevent the creation of a "surveillance state." DeSantis is currently reviewing restrictive laws in New Hampshire and has requested an overview of how Florida state agencies utilize the technology.

The debate centers on Flock Safety, the largest supplier of AI-enabled cameras in the U.S. While some officials argue the tools are essential for criminal investigations, critics and the opposition group DeFlock warn of privacy violations. In Arizona, Mayor Corey Woods deactivated Tempe's license-plate reader system and terminated its contract with Flock Safety on Wednesday, stating the risk of misuse outweighed the benefits.

Simultaneously, several law enforcement agencies in Ohio and Florida have attempted to mitigate privacy concerns by launching online transparency portals. The Delhi Township Police Department in Ohio, the Tallahassee Police Department, and the Leon County Sheriff's Office established these portals to share policies and data on license plate reads. Officials from these agencies, including Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell and Leon County Sheriff Walt McNeil, stated the portals are intended to build community trust and ensure accountability.
