Syria Urges UN Protection Against Israeli Airstrikes

Ibrahim Olabi called on the United Nations to protect Syrian sovereignty from Israeli attacks while highlighting the country's new cooperation with nuclear watchdogs.

Syria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ibrahim Olabi, called on the international community to protect Syrian sovereignty against Israeli airstrikes and incursions during a speech before the UN General Assembly on Friday. Olabi condemned the attacks, noting that bombings occurred on the same day International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Grossi visited the country.

Olabi contrasted the current administration's approach with that of the ousted regime, which he accused of smuggling drugs, using chemical weapons, and obstructing international commitments. He stated that the new Syria has chosen to shoulder its responsibilities with courage to uphold an international system that is crumbling under the weight of violations.

As part of a strategic shift toward transparency, Syria opened all nuclear sites to the IAEA and disclosed previously undeclared materials. This cooperation led the agency to remove a non-compliance finding. Olabi urged the UN to support these efforts to restore stability and uphold international law amid nationwide demonstrations against occupation and ongoing tensions in southern Syria.
