Technical stresses occur primarily during the training of new models, where GPUs power up and down on a millisecond basis, causing batteries, generators, and cooling systems to degrade prematurely.
Physical damage has already manifested at the Colossus facility operated by xAI in Memphis, Tennessee, where gas-fired turbines developed cracks. The Uptime Institute, LLC. reports that batteries in some AI data centers are being replaced within weeks due to high strain. These reliability issues have dropped uptime at some facilities to 80%, resulting in operational delays and revenue losses.
Beyond individual sites, the North American Electric Reliability Corporation warns that these dynamic loads pose a significant risk of blackouts for the wider grid. In response, Nvidia Corp. is collaborating with power experts to redesign GPU power delivery. Additionally, the U.S. Department of Energy has established a test-bed at the National Laboratory of the Rockies to develop safe grid integration strategies. These concerns are already impacting expansion, such as a planned 2.67-gigawatt AI campus in West Texas currently facing delivery delays to ensure system reliability.
