Russia Arms Civilian LNG Tanker in Baltic Sea

Estonia released surveillance images showing Russia armed a Gazprom LNG tanker with machine guns to protect maritime routes to the Kaliningrad exclave.

The Government of Russia has equipped the Marshal Vasilevskiy, a civilian liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker owned by Gazprom Flot LLC, with 12.7-millimeter Kord heavy machine guns and sandbagged firing positions. Surveillance photographs released by Estonian authorities show the fortifications on the vessel's bridge roof, with sightings occurring in the Baltic Sea during the spring of 2026.

The vessel serves as a critical energy supply route to the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad. Intelligence reports indicate the tanker has transported passengers with ties to the Russian military and the Federal Security Service. Analysts suggest the militarization is a deterrent against Ukrainian sea drone attacks—following a similar strike on the Arctic Metagaz in the Mediterranean—and a warning to NATO and EU forces against boarding or inspecting the ship.

Nikolai Patrushev, an aide to President Vladimir Putin, defended the measures, stating that Russia cannot allow the blockade of key maritime routes in the Baltic and Black Seas. While the Marshal Vasilevskiy has faced sanctions from Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom, the Estonian Navy has ceased attempting to detain certain Russia-linked vessels. Ivo Vark, commander of Estonia's navy, noted that the risk of military escalation is currently too high to justify such interventions.
