Jetstar and Qatar Airways Planes Narrowly Avoid Sydney Airport Collision

A Jetstar Airbus A320 carrying 180 passengers narrowly avoided a collision with a Qatar Airways Boeing 777 at Sydney Airport around 7:00 am on Sunday. The Jetstar Airways pilot braked firmly after spotting the Qatar aircraft, which was being towed by a tug vehicle on a crossing taxiway. The sudden stop caused minor injuries to a cabin crew member and damaged the nose gear of the Qatar plane and the tug vehicle. The flight to the Gold Coast was subsequently cancelled.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is investigating the incident, with initial findings suggesting the tug vehicle may have failed to follow instructions. This near-miss follows a separate incident involving two Qantas flights on Wednesday and comes amid widespread flight delays caused by staffing shortages at Airservices Australia.

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns expressed concern over the safety risks and the economic impact of air traffic controller shortages. Stephen Beckett, Chief Executive of Airlines for Australia and New Zealand, stated that these staffing shortages were causing the aviation network to grind to a halt.
