Columbia County Approves $17 Billion Alphabet Data Center Deal

The Economic Development Authority of Columbia County approved a $17 billion data center agreement with Kinetic Infrastructure Solutions, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc. The deal provides the county with $40 million annually for seven years, with the first payment expected by late 2024 or early 2025. The Development Authority will receive approximately $5 million per year from the arrangement.

County officials intend to use these funds to eliminate the county's portion of homestead property taxes, which currently generate $25 million annually. However, the implementation of this tax relief is contingent upon voters authorizing House Bill 439 this November and a state constitutional amendment to remove the $18,000 per household relief cap.

County Manager Scott Johnson stated that the county informed Google in advance of the requirements for doing business in the area, noting that property tax relief was a primary focus of the negotiations. Rick Evans, Chair of the Development Authority, said the investment was structured to ensure the value created stays within the community.
