Luke Gosling Charged With Assault After NT Festival Incident

Labor Member for Solomon Luke Gosling has been charged with two counts of assault following an alleged incident with Northern Territory Administrator David Connolly on July 18 at the NT Thailand Grand Festival in Darwin. Gosling denied the allegations during a Friday appearance at the Darwin Local Court, where he was granted bail. His bail conditions prohibit him from approaching Government House within 50 meters and require him to maintain a 15-meter distance from Connolly at shared events, with a 48-hour notice period for attendance.

Opposition Leader Angus Taylor and Nationals Senator Bridget McKenzie have called on Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to strip Gosling of his role as special envoy for defence, veterans' affairs and northern Australia. While Gosling has stated his intention to contest the charges and continue serving, McKenzie argued that the prime minister should stand him aside until the matter is resolved in court.

Attorney-General Michelle Rowland declined to comment on whether Gosling should step aside, citing the ongoing legal proceedings. Prime Minister Albanese is currently on leave, with Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles acting in his stead. The case is scheduled to return to court on September 1.
