Microsoft Withdraws From Loughton Data Center Agreement

Microsoft withdrew as the anchor tenant for an Nscale data center in Loughton, United Kingdom, citing grid connection delays and electricity supply issues.

Microsoft has withdrawn from a planned data center agreement in Loughton, United Kingdom, where it was slated to serve as the anchor tenant for AI infrastructure provider Nscale. The decision follows reports that the facility may not secure a grid connection until the 2030s, combined with general project delays and difficulties in obtaining electricity supplies.

Microsoft has not publicly commented on the withdrawal, but the move creates significant financial risk for Nscale. The company is currently preparing for a potential initial public offering that could raise up to $3 billion as early as October. According to IPO filings, Microsoft and Anthropic account for approximately 85% of Nscale's contracts, meaning the loss of a primary tenant could diminish investor appeal and hinder expansion.

Nscale stated it remains committed to the Loughton site and is exploring alternative power sources. The company maintains that its relationship with Microsoft remains strong. These setbacks occur as Nscale's flagship data center in Norway is also reportedly six months behind schedule.
