UAE Invests Billions to Bypass Strait of Hormuz

The United Arab Emirates is investing billions in Fujairah port infrastructure to eliminate its trade reliance on the Strait of Hormuz.

The United Arab Emirates is implementing a "zero Hormuz" strategy to secure its trade and energy routes by bypassing the Strait of Hormuz. This strategic shift focuses on expanding port infrastructure in Fujairah to reduce the nation's vulnerability to disruptions in the strategic waterway.

To lead this effort, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi established Lamaad Holding, a new sovereign wealth fund. As a primary step in the strategy, Lamaad Holding took the Abu Dhabi Ports Company private in a transaction that valued the entity at approximately $9 billion. The fund intends to spend tens of billions of dollars on further port infrastructure in the coming months and years.

While government officials support the initiative, critics point to regional challenges that may complicate the bypass. Specifically, they cite Saudi Arabia's pipeline expansions to the Red Sea as an example of how regional conflicts and Houthi activity can threaten alternative infrastructure.
