Shabana Mahmood Orders Border Review After Record Daily Crossings

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has ordered an urgent review by the UK Border Security Command after two migrant boats reached the Kent coast undetected within 48 hours. The first vessel landed at Folkestone on Monday, followed by a second at Samphire Hoe in Dover on Tuesday, where 21 people were detained. Mahmood described the failures as "not acceptable," stating that "even one uncontrolled landing is one too many."

The security lapses coincided with a surge in activity; the Home Office recorded 781 migrants arriving in 10 boats on Wednesday, the highest single-day total for 2026. Education Secretary Lucy Powell defended the government, arguing that authorities "can't stop everything all of the time," though she maintained that the overall trend is improving. Provisional data shows a 42% decrease in crossings compared to the same period in 2025.

Opposition figures have condemned the administration's handling of the border. Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp claimed the government has "lost control," while Reform UK leader Nigel Farage proposed deploying the Royal Navy to stop the boats. Meanwhile, the crisis has seen rising casualties on the French coast, where two migrants recently died during boarding attempts, and footage emerged of a man abandoning a child in the sea to board a dinghy.

To curb arrivals, the United Kingdom has pledged nearly $900 million to fund French police patrols through 2029 and implemented a "one in, one out" return agreement. However, the Immigration Service Union warns that uncontrolled landings continue to occur along the entire south coast as smugglers adapt their tactics.
