Belgium Arrests Canadian NATO Intern for Alleged Chinese Espionage

Belgian authorities arrested Biwei Zhang, a Canadian national of Chinese origin, for allegedly spying for China while serving as an intern at the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe in Mons. NATO security services identified Zhang's suspicious behavior, which included lingering around buildings and asking probing questions, and reported her to the Belgian Federal Prosecutor's Office.

Zhang worked in the IT department and is further suspected of membership in a criminal organization. She is currently held in pretrial custody, a decision she has appealed. NATO officials stated the incident did not affect operational readiness, though the case highlights systemic security challenges involving China.

In response, Canada's Minister of Public Safety, Gary Anandasangaree, announced a review of the country's security screening processes. The Canadian government is responsible for vetting interns posted to NATO through Global Affairs Canada and the Canadian Security Intelligence Service. These agencies provide the security assessments required to grant clearances for Canadian citizens in international organizations.
