Undercover Video Shows Arizona Canvassers Encouraging Ineligible Voter Registration

Muckraker released undercover footage of organizations supporting Governor Katie Hobbs encouraging noncitizens and felons to register to vote in Arizona.

Undercover journalists from Muckraker released video evidence showing canvassers from several organizations supporting Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs's re-election encouraging ineligible individuals to register to vote. The investigation targeted groups including Stand Indivisible Arizona, Worker Power, the AFL-CIO, and the Democratic National Committee's 'When We Count' program.

At Paradise Valley Community College, a Stand Indivisible Arizona canvasser encouraged a journalist posing as a Canadian citizen to register and suggested sharing registration QR codes with other Canadians. At the Phoenix Public Library, a Worker Power canvasser marked 'yes' on the citizenship question for a journalist who stated they were not a citizen. Meanwhile, at Mesa Community College, 'When We Count' canvassers urged a journalist posing as a felon on probation to register, despite acknowledging the person's ineligibility.

Additionally, a trainer at an AFL-CIO phone bank told a volunteer that citizenship status was not their business. While Arizona law does not require registration drives to verify citizenship, knowingly procuring the registration of an ineligible person is a class 6 felony. Muckraker reported that no registration forms were actually submitted during the exercises. Governor Katie Hobbs has not responded to questions regarding the findings.
