South Korea October Exports Surge 93.7% Toward $1 Trillion Target
South Korea reported a 93.7% increase in October exports to $115.28 billion, driven by a semiconductor boom and recovered vehicle shipments.
The South Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy reported that exports rose 93.7% year-on-year to $115.28 billion in October, accelerating the country's progress toward an annual target of $1 trillion. Cumulative exports for the first 10 months of the year reached $930 billion, with October trade surpluses hitting $42.50 billion, exceeding market expectations.
Semiconductor exports more than tripled to $56.44 billion, fueled by massive infrastructure investments in artificial intelligence. This demand led to record earnings for memory-chip makers Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. Growth was particularly pronounced in the United States, where shipments nearly tripled, and China, where they more than doubled.
Other sectors also contributed to the surge. Vehicle exports increased by 18% after labor unrest at Hyundai Motor Company was resolved, allowing production to return to normal. Petroleum products and petrochemical goods further supported the growth trend.
