U.S. Implements Naval Blockade and Sanctions Against Iran
The United States deployed a naval blockade around Iran and sanctioned maritime firms to disrupt financing for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The Federal government of the United States has established a military blockade described as a "steel wall" around Iranian waters. To enforce the restrictions, the United States Central Command deployed more than 20 warships across the Middle East, redirected 18 commercial vessels, disabled two others, and boarded two ships for compliance verification.
Simultaneously, the United States Department of the Treasury sanctioned 10 entities and eight tankers to disrupt Iranian efforts to monetize the Strait of Hormuz. These measures target the Persian Gulf Marine Insurance Company and HormuzSafe Marine Services Authority, which U.S. officials allege extort commercial vessels by charging for protection against risks created by the Iranian regime. The sanctions also target a "shadow fleet" of tankers that transported Iranian oil to China and the United Arab Emirates between 2022 and 2026.
These economic and naval actions follow the interception of Iranian ballistic missiles aimed at U.S. forces and joint U.S.-Saudi Arabian strikes against Iran-backed groups in Iraq. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated the operations aim to prevent the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps from using international shipping to finance its activities while the Iranian economy faces severe instability.
