Walmart Settles DOJ Lawsuit Over Opioid Dispensing Practices
Walmart reached a settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice to resolve allegations that its pharmacies unlawfully dispensed opioids and other controlled substances.
Walmart Inc. reached a settlement with the United States Department of Justice to resolve a federal lawsuit alleging the company's pharmacies unlawfully dispensed opioids and other controlled substances starting in 2013. The Justice Department originally filed the suit in 2020, claiming the retailer violated the Controlled Substances Act.
U.S. District Judge Colm Connolly dismissed several allegations in March 2024, including claims that the company failed to flag suspicious prescriptions to the Drug Enforcement Administration. However, the case proceeded on claims that individual pharmacists and compliance staff knew certain prescriptions should not have been filled.
This federal agreement follows a separate 2022 settlement in which the company paid $3.1 billion to resolve thousands of lawsuits from state and local governments regarding its role in the opioid epidemic. The United States Department of Justice stated it was pleased to resolve allegations that the pharmacies failed to comply with their obligations under the Controlled Substances Act.
