OpenAI Grants ChatGPT Control Over Apple iMessage on Mac
OpenAI released a feature allowing ChatGPT on Mac to read, write, and summarize iMessage conversations through local system permissions.
OpenAI released a feature on Thursday that allows ChatGPT on the Mac to control the iMessage service. The integration enables the AI to read, write, send, and search text messages, as well as generate summaries of conversations.
To activate the tool, users must grant consent through ChatGPT and modify Mac System Settings to enable Full Disk Access and permissions for contacts and automation tools. OpenAI stated the plug-in runs locally using AppleScript and Accessibility tools and does not create a message index.
The rollout occurs during a period of legal conflict, as Apple sued OpenAI last month for trade secret theft. The feature directly competes with upcoming Siri AI capabilities and may conflict with Apple's privacy policies, which previously led the company to shut down third-party iMessage apps such as Beeper Mini.
