Heathrow Expansion Could Support 50,000 Local Jobs by 2055

Heathrow Airport launched an Economic Development Framework to support 50,000 jobs and 5,000 apprenticeships linked to its proposed third runway expansion.

Heathrow Airport announced that its proposed third runway expansion could support at least 50,000 jobs in surrounding communities by 2055. This projection includes 33,000 jobs across nine neighboring local authority areas and approximately 17,500 roles during the peak of construction.

To facilitate this growth, the airport launched its Economic Development Framework. The initiative includes plans for 5,000 youth apprenticeships and traineeships, a refreshed in-person work experience program for students, and an annual careers event starting in March 2027. The airport is also expanding its SME Academy to help small businesses enter its supply chain and has established the Heathrow Infrastructure Skills Council to coordinate training with unions and colleges.

As part of a national Department for Education initiative, the airport will contribute to the West London Construction Training Excellence Centre. The projected employment benefits cover areas including Hillingdon, Hounslow, Ealing, Spelthorne, Slough, Runnymede, Windsor and Maidenhead, Buckinghamshire, and Elmbridge.
