Temporary Help Services Drive US Labor Market Recovery

Temporary help services are adding significant jobs in the US as young workers seek autonomy and companies prioritize project-based hiring to manage costs.

The United States labor market is seeing a significant recovery in temporary help services, which have added the second-highest number of jobs across more than 300 industries in 2026. Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that one in ten jobs created this year has been a temporary position, with 3,400 additions recorded in July alone.

This growth is driven by diverging preferences between workers and employers. Young adults under 24 are increasingly opting for contract work to gain greater autonomy and reduce reliance on a single employer. Simultaneously, companies are shifting toward project-based hiring to maintain flexibility and limit costs amid economic uncertainty and inflation.

Demand for contingent labor is highest in the construction, transportation, professional services, healthcare, and government sectors. This trend may require employers to increase investments in workplace culture and retention strategies to avoid disrupting productivity and losing critical knowledge pipelines.
