Indiana BMV Grants Disability Parking Permits to Autism Caregivers
The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles now issues disability parking placards and license plates to caregivers of individuals with Level 2 or Level 3 autism.
The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles has expanded eligibility for disability parking placards and license plates to include parents and caregivers of children and adults diagnosed with Level 2 or Level 3 autism spectrum disorder. These classifications are reserved for individuals requiring substantial or very substantial support.
Governor Mike Braun stated the initiative is intended to reduce safety risks for caregivers and their charges in busy parking lots. Officials noted that the permits help mitigate dangers associated with sensory overload, limited danger awareness, and elopement in crowded areas.
To qualify, caregivers must submit a state application featuring certification from a licensed physician, advanced practice registered nurse, or physician assistant. Applicants can file their requests via mail or at any Indiana BMV branch.
