Nigeria Hides Economic Data as World Bank Exposes N34 Trillion Diversion

Nigerian agencies suppressed unemployment data and violated fiscal reporting laws while the World Bank exposed N34.53 trillion in diverted government revenues.

Nigeria faces a mounting institutional credibility crisis as government agencies suppress economic data and violate fiscal transparency laws amid revelations of massive public fund diversions. The National Bureau of Statistics has failed to publish updated labour force data for over 14 months, following a controversial 2024 report that claimed unemployment dropped to 4.3% despite widespread business closures. The Nigeria Labour Congress rejected those figures as fraudulent.

The Budget Office of the Federation has simultaneously violated the Fiscal Responsibility Act by failing to release budget implementation reports for three consecutive quarters, including the first quarter of 2026. This lack of transparency coincides with the approval of a N68.3 trillion budget for 2026.

World Bank findings have compounded concerns by revealing that N34.53 trillion in government revenues were diverted through pre-distribution deductions between 2023 and 2025. ActionAid Nigeria described this pattern as institutionalized revenue erosion. Further allegations indicate that N800 billion in state funds were diverted to private accounts linked to Hope Uzodimma, the Governor of Imo State and Chairman of the Progressive Governors' Forum, purportedly to finance Bola Tinubu's 2027 re-election campaign.

The convergence of data suppression, statutory reporting failures, and massive fund diversions has intensified scrutiny of Nigeria's fiscal governance at a time when the government has approved its largest-ever budget.
