Comcast Launches WiFi Motion Home Security Sensing Feature
Comcast released WiFi Motion, a software-based security tool that turns Xfinity routers into motion detectors by analyzing radio frequency signal disruptions.
Comcast launched Xfinity Shield, a home security platform featuring WiFi Motion, a software-based tool that converts Xfinity Gateway routers (XB7 and newer) into motion detectors. The technology uses Wi-Fi sensing to monitor changes in wireless signal strength and radio frequency interference between the gateway and connected devices, removing the need for physical sensors or cameras. The free service offers three monitoring modes—Home Watch, Away Watch, and Dark Watch—while a paid Shield Select tier for $15 per month adds AI-powered cameras and 24/7 emergency response.
Company executives described the feature as a foundation for future applications, including assistance for people aging in place. However, the launch has triggered privacy concerns. Comcast terms allow the company to disclose WiFi Motion data to law enforcement or third parties during legal disputes or investigations.
Further alarm was raised by researchers at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. They demonstrated that WiFi beamforming feedback can identify specific individuals with 99.5% accuracy once a radio signature is recorded. This finding suggests the technology possesses surveillance capabilities that exceed the company's stated limitations, which claim the system does not identify individuals.
