US Regional Banks Report Strong Q3 Loan Growth
US regional banks reported strong third-quarter earnings driven by robust business loan demand, particularly within the artificial intelligence infrastructure ecosystem.
US regional banks reported strong third-quarter earnings fueled by robust business loan demand, mirroring growth trends seen at larger institutions like JPMorgan Chase and Bank of America. PNC Financial led the regional sector with loan growth of 14.2%, followed by U.S. Bancorp, M&T Bank, and Citizens Financial.
This borrowing activity persists despite a September interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve and high inflation linked to the Iran war. Banking executives attributed a significant portion of this growth to the artificial intelligence ecosystem build-out, noting that companies are prioritizing compute power and infrastructure regardless of higher borrowing costs. This AI-driven demand has also cascaded into tangential sectors, including energy and transportation.
While AI is a primary driver, executives also noted broad-based growth in the retail, insurance, and food and beverage industries. William Demchak, CEO of PNC Financial, noted that while global uncertainty remains, the economy continues to show strength as people continue to invest.
