Claudia Sheinbaum Signs Decree Requiring Digital Content Protections

President Claudia Sheinbaum signed a decree requiring digital platforms to protect minors from harmful content following a high school attack in Coahuila.

President Claudia Sheinbaum signed a presidential decree on October 14 requiring digital platforms, including social networks and streaming sites, to protect children and teenagers from violent, sexual, and other harmful content. The mandate gives technology firms one month to comply with the new requirements.

The initiative follows an early October attack at a high school in Coahuila, where two 18-year-old former students killed one person and wounded three others. In response, the Mexican government held meetings with representatives from Meta, Microsoft, Apple, TikTok, Google, X, and Huawei to discuss the implementation of these protections.

President Sheinbaum stated that the government will support legislation to penalize firms that fail to follow the decree. Government adviser Luisa María Alcalde Luján confirmed the one-month compliance window for the platforms.
