California DMV Orders 11,000 Drivers to Retake Knowledge Exams

The California Department of Motor Vehicles is requiring 11,000 drivers to retake written exams within 30 days or face license revocation due to testing anomalies.

The California Department of Motor Vehicles has notified approximately 11,000 drivers that they must retake their written knowledge exams within 30 days or face license revocation. The mandate affects individuals who took their tests between July 2025 and April 2026, with the agency stating that internal monitoring identified anomalies and irregularities indicating that licenses were issued in error.

While the DMV initially declined to specify if the irregularities resulted from cheating or technical failures, it later stated the issue was not caused by an internal technology problem. The agency emphasized that ensuring the integrity of the testing process is essential to confirm that drivers understand the rules of the road. Because the DMV discontinued online testing in January 2025, affected motorists must complete the retests in person.

The order coincides with a partnership between Governor Gavin Newsom's office and Anthropic to expand the use of the AI assistant Claude within state agencies. Although some affected drivers in cities such as Sacramento, San Francisco, and Santa Monica have speculated that AI tools were used to flag the results, the DMV has not confirmed a link between the AI partnership and the retake notices. Impacted residents report difficulties scheduling appointments and unexpected travel costs to comply with the mandate.
