UK Demands EU Industrial Act Inclusion Before Reset Summit

The Government of the United Kingdom is conditioning the scheduling of a planned reset summit on the inclusion of the European Union's Industrial Accelerator Act, known as the Made in Europe legislation, on the agenda. British officials fear the laws, which prioritize EU suppliers in defense and car manufacturing to reduce reliance on China, could exclude British firms from critical contracts and threaten billions in trade.

Cabinet minister Hamish Falconer communicated this priority to EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic. While Germany, Italy, Poland, and the Netherlands reportedly support the UK's request, the French Republic, which architected the laws, remains opposed and is pushing for implementation by the end of the year to counter Chinese influence.

This diplomatic friction coincides with the European Commission's pursuit of a new associate membership deal with Canada. The potential shift in strategic priorities toward Canada adds pressure to the UK's efforts to secure a favorable reset with Brussels.
